County chases energy grant

The Ellis County Commissioners’ Court passed a resolution Thursday allowing the engineering department to apply for a grant that aims to increase energy efficiency in the county.
The grant, called the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant, is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Ellis County is eligible to apply for $120,000 in funds, said Joe White, Ellis County engineer. The State Energy Conservation Office is allocating the grant.

Although Ellis County has several new buildings under construction that will be energy efficient, some of the older structures are inefficient when it comes to energy use, White said.

One of these structures is the existing jail. At the jail, some of the HVAC units are over 15 years old and uneconomical, he said.
