Spotlight on … Eliza Fulton

As an avid bookworm, Eliza Fulton is often in the midst of three books at any given time.
However, the executive director of the Greater Ennis United Way has never taken the ability to read for granted.

Reading was a struggle for Eliza throughout her childhood, she said.

Her parents were passionate readers, and books were a part of everyday life. Eliza’s difficulty was hard to assess for the various public school systems she went through in the 1970s. She said her family moved around a lot — Eliza was born in upstate New York, but the family lived throughout New England and the Midwest. Not staying anywhere for an extended period made it easy for Eliza’s problem to go unnoticed by the schools she attended.

But her mother was determined to find out the cause of Eliza’s inability to read. She didn’t accept what the school districts told her — that Eliza wouldn’t be able to succeed in the regular classroom.

“One of the things my parents taught me was to question everything,” Eliza said. “Some school districts just didn’t know how to handle my problem.”
