Tech, health awareness are no-brainers

The local school district’s move to keep health and technology in its high school curriculum requirements is easily understood.
While the state Legislature may not think those kinds of courses are instrumental in a student’s future success, a bevy of districts around Texas, parents and even students know better. The state has its reasons, especially considering budget issues that have loomed for a number of years, but if the district has the resources, why not teach more of the skills we know to be key?

Technology awareness is a no-brainer. Every job is requiring more of an understanding of communication and computer skills. Some of the best earners in today’s market actually make communication and the related technology their business. It goes beyond the intricacies of Facebook, Twitter and text messaging on cell phones, too. Providing students with the basics of spreadsheets, word processing and other key technology accepted as fundamental in the last few decades is just good practice.

We would go further — granted not every child is a technophile and course loads are already jam packed with requirements that run the educational gamut, but given the fast pace of technology, we’ll be doing our children a favor by giving them as much of a lead as possible. Health education is also key. Teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and lifesaving techniques are part of the “ugly” reality we may be able to shield our students from before they reach their teenage years, but it becomes absolutely necessary to reach them once those influences are front and center.

The district’s decision to include those concepts in its curriculum for high school students is a good step, and we think the district is making good strides in keeping current and putting children first in its decisions for the district.

We know the time will come when our children will be in a position of power in our society, and we need to make sure they reflect the kind of people we need to have in those positions. Preparation is the only way to be sure, and school is the best battlefield in that war.
