Hawks hold on against Lion baseball

Pitcher’s injury leads to change
Coach Kevin Kalinec: “Travis [Wallis] was scheduled to get the start, but we found out earlier in the day that he would be out at least 10 days with a strained elbow.
That injury had us needing to revamp our pitching rotation and Rusty didn’t know he’d start until a few hours before the game. It’s just an unfortunate injury that happens in baseball and Rusty gave us everything he had as he always does.
It’s always good to see us hit with runners on base and Rusty came up big [with a two-RBI single in the first]. I was really excited about the 2-0 lead and thought we came out ready to play. We’ve got to learn to keep pouring it on.
Red Oak’s pitching was very good (12 Ennis strikeouts), but they had control problems (7 walks, 1 hit batter) and gave us opportunities to win the ballgame. It’s very frustrating because we’re facing everybody’s No. 1 pitcher and are still in every ballgame. The bottom line is we’re not hitting the baseball.
Dustin had a great game behind the plate and he threw out three of four runners trying to steal, which is an excellent percentage at any level. His hamstring is hurting right now, but defensively he’s still been outstanding.
At 1-4 in district, we probably have to win out to have a realistic shot at the playoffs unless one of these other teams has a meltdown. In ’92, we won six-straight games at the end of district to give ourselves a chance, so it can be done. It’s all about heart and desire the rest of the way.”
