Water rate boost in the works

A city water rate increase foreshadowed during the summer’s budget-planning process has made it to the commission’s Monday agenda.
The city commission will consider a rate hike of about $275,000 system-wide in the first reading of a new ordinance at its regularly scheduled meeting Monday. The item will also be considered in public hearing. The hike would be realized through a $3 increase on residential and commercial customers enacted by removing what amounts to a free 1,000 gallons of water the city has provided its customers.

The move would create an increase of approximately 5.71 percent in total system revenues and would reduce dependence on reserves by about 47.5 percent.
