Learning Ennis from the inside out

It’s good to know that Ennis has been growing in the last few years.
That information should come as no shock to those who have been following the path of recruitment and expansion Ennis has taken with many of its business and industrial ventures. The noteworthy part of it is the data that show Ennis has grown by nearly half of its total permit value in just the last decade.

That’s a significant move forward for an area south of Dallas that has been relatively slower in its growth curve than areas in the more northerly region of the metroplex. We’re setting a stage for more growth and development by encouraging and supporting that much activity in recent years. Activity breeds more activity, so to speak.

What does this news mean for us as we forge into the new decade? It sets a bar of economic development activity that if met this decade could see Ennis experience growth like it’s never seen before.

It also means Ennis has been able to enjoy a relatively stable economy during a recession that has crippled state and local governments nationwide. While there are some valid concerns that retail activity and non-industrial expansion projects are too rare, there have been significant gains in that area that shouldn’t be overlooked — multimillion dollar operations have located here in the last decade, not the least of which is Ennis Regional Medical Center.

Ennis residents should be excited to know their city is growing, because the saying “if you’re not growing, you’re dying” has been hanging over governments trapped by the current recession ominously.

We haven’t suffered quite that kind of hardship here, at least in the public sector, and that’s notable.
