Getting behind the new coach with support

The dust has settled, and Ennis has a new head football coach.
Months of uncertainty lay behind us. The same can be said for the months and years that stretch before us in the Ennis career of former Kirbyville ISD head coach Jack Alvarez.

Some may dismiss the moment of Alvarez’s anointing as the new coach as insignificant, but we certainly don’t. It’s a watershed for Ennis.
Filling in the shoes of Sam Harrell, a giant of a football coach for our community, is no small feat.

The Lions embody a host of ideals to the fans who love them, from the young athlete gunning for a chance to the grizzled veteran looking back on his youth at every game he attends. Alvarez’s reach will certainly be felt here.

It may take time, as it did for Harrell, for Alvarez to achieve the greatness here that makes Ennis so special in state football.

As we have said before, he has the hopes and pride of a community in his pocket, and we know the board members of the EISD’s Board of Trustees are all watching their chosen candidate closely now to see how he holds up.

There was an incredible amount of interest in our town from the outside-in, giving local officials a number of candidates from whom to choose. It’s never an easy call to make, either.

This much is certain — Ennis will throw itself behind its varsity Lion football team in the fall, come what may.

The rest is in the hands of the coaches and the players.
