A shout out to the youth of EISD

With all of the trash on television and the bad behavior glorified by national headlines it seems to me it’s a tough time to be a teenager.
That being said, it’s nice to know that there are hard-working kids with a clear perspective of their futures right here in Ennis working to shed a positive light on their generation.

It wasn’t all that long ago that I roamed the halls of high school but when thinking about the differences from then to now it feels like an eternity.

I’d like to give a shout out to MTV for the dismal, IQ-depleting content that is the programming you air like “The Jersey Shore” and “Teen Mom.”

It’s not likely that your executives are losing any sleep at night because the content being shoved down the throats of young people not only on your own network but also through as many media outlets as possible are polluting the minds and priorities of the masses.

What are your viewers really learning from shows like these? Perhaps the importance of overexposure to tanning, which will likely ensure skin cancer in the future or maybe how to binge drink until you’re falling down at all hours of the day in any venue.

Then there are the teen girls that are seeing pregnant teenagers made famous on magazine covers and thinking that life looks pretty good.

MTV isn’t solely to blame though. After all they are just milking the cash cow to their advantage like any savvy business-minded execs would do.

We can’t leave out the companies offering these idiots book deals and endorsement opportunities.

I have no delusions that this situation will improve.

On the contrary, I think it’s a slippery slope straight to disaster, but my faith is restored when I think of some of the young people I’ve had the privilege of meeting right here in Ennis.

So many of the kids that come out of EISD go on to be successful in whatever path they’ve chosen and I think the district deserves a lot of credit for that.

These students are given so many options to really cultivate their interests and find their talents before they’re sent out into the world and it’s refreshing.

These kids are determined, hardworking and not afraid to dream of things that matter.

Senior Grace Nelson comes to mind. She just became the first student on record in EISD history to make the Texas All-State Choir.

For those of you that may not know what that entails, trust me when I tell you it’s a rigorous process that one doesn’t get through on talent alone. Nelson set a goal for herself and put in the work necessary to realize it.

Jaslin Hughes, who took second place at the state UIL speech contest in poetry interpretation, as well as 2010 graduates Katelyn Dolezalik, Taylor Goodwin and Andrew Hejny all impressed me with their determination and their vision for future accomplishments.

These kids don’t just dream the dreams, they back them up and I’m sure there are many more where they came from, not only at the high school level but also throughout the district.

It restores some faith in the future of humanity for me to see these success stories right in our own backyard and know that there are intelligent, driven and thoughtful young people looking toward the future with high expectations for themselves as well as their generation as a whole.

I’m grateful to their parents, their educators and anyone in their support system who has helped them and others like them along in their journey.

They are bright spots in the dull outlook that presents itself most days and I wish them continued success and am confident they’ll find it.

Kacy Hibdon wishes she had half as much figured out as a teenager as some of the brilliant youth in Ennis. She is a staff writer for the Ennis Daily News and can be reached at kacy@ennisdailynews.com.
