Football Coach’s Classic spawns low scores

A beautiful spring Sunday afternoon produced a shootout on the links at Ennis Country Club, as many of the area’s best golfers vied for top prize money in the Second Annual Ennis Football Coach’s Golf Classic April 15.
Soft greens and a high level of talent led to some very low total scores from the bring-your-best three-man scramble format. When the scorer’s pencil had its final tally, the team of David Leach, Allen Clark and Blake Hodges had scorched the championship 18-hole course with a blistering 58. Close behind, the second place team of Randy Caldwell, Brandon Caldwell and Chris Vasquez carded a 59. Eric Bernard, Brian Simmons and Mike Turner totaled 60 strokes to take third place money.
Brandon Caldwell took home $50 for the longest drive of the day, while Lane Rust also pocketed $50 for closest-to-the-pin.
Twenty-two teams took to the course in the competition, from that field 13 teams shot 63 or better with a five-way tie for fourth at 61-under par.
"The tournament is growing every year," said co-director Gary Fincher.
"We hope to have an even larger field next season and give away more money".
"We had a great time out here today", said golfer Matt Laffollet. "Wish we had played a little better, but we’re looking forward to next year."
Several of the Ennis coaching staff or former players putted or took shots on different holes throughout the course with head coach Sam Harrell and defensive coach Gary Jessie putting for each team as they came through on the 18th green.
"Coach (Sam) Harrell was the best putter on our team today", said Waxahachie native Matt McClain.
"If he had putt on every hole, we’d had a better shot at winning."
"This is just a fun time for us", said Harrell.
"We get to get out here and enjoy a day of golf and meet all these people. The staff appreciates every one of these guys for playing and all our tournament sponsors for making it all possible. We thank them and hope they’ll all come back next year."
In addition to the prize money awarded, drawings were held for many different type of golf balls, equipment, attire and a #6 Texas Tech game-jersey autographed by Tech QB Graham Harrell.
