Avalon Eagles open camp with new QB, Smith


Following last year’s 7-4 campaign, Avalon Head Coach Malcolm Cole has 13 players in pre-season camp, nine of them returning from last season. Those numbers would be frightening to coaches of 11-man football, but not at all to the 6-man Eagles. The tangerine-clad squad is practicing from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and Wednesdays from 6-9 a.m. Beating the heat and keeping the roster fresh is the strategy of Cole, whose team has remained relatively injury-free through two weeks of camp.
