Avalon, Newton explode, 63-16

Avalon (2-1) extended a 15-0 lead after one quarter with 36 in the second period to power the Eagles to a 63-16 rout at Walnut Springs (1-3). Rhett Newton racked up 218 total yards and four scores, including 124 rushing on nine carries, and completed 3-of-4 passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Miguel Padron did similarly, hitting all four of his passes for 47 yards and a TD and dashed 52 on six totes and two more TDs as the Orange squeezed the Hornets. The driving force behind the win was 200 yards rushing, powered by four blockers: Adrian Sanchez, Bryan Faber, Michael Hernandez and Tristan Smith. Avalon also passed for 192 yards. Padron opened the game with a one-yard run before Newton fired a 61-yarder to Faber, a huge target at tight end, for a 15-0 margin. A 5-yard Newton to Michael Hernandez pass pushed the lead to 22-0 before Walnut Springs scored two touchdowns in 16 seconds. Read stories like this and more in your latest edition of The Ennis News.
