Coaching the can’t miss kid

I tried the whistle and clipboard. It was fun, creative and invigorating – at times.

Communicating and building camaraderie came easily. But it didn’t take long to see that when I had good players, we won. When we didn’t, we didn’t.

Trouble is, many an adult believe they could do better. Add to that, a lot of players have a very high opinion of their skills. So do their parents, but we’ll save that column for another time.

Coaching – equipping and improving player techniques is a great skill. It isn’t easy, especially when the athlete isn’t that talented. But when he or she shows great dedication by going to off-season camps and endures strength and conditioning, the odds of becoming good increase.
