District season looms for Lions

Experience counts for plenty in most sports, though the lack of it isn’t being counted against the Ennis football team according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine. No team in District 8-5A has less that the Lions eight starters and no team returns fewer than their 13 incumbent lettermen. Yet Team Maroon is the odds-on favorite to finish first in the nine-team league. To project the Oval E’s as the team to beat in 2018, despite having more greenhorns, suggests the program is deeper than others. Followers of the system realize the serious coaching and attention given to youngsters from seventh grade through sophomores. The offense has three linemen in the fold in Jordan McCray, Dillon Jurcik and Christian Adams, with running back James Harris and tight end Jarius Jones also considered dominant. Ryan Casas and Zane Rider are the lone defensive players returning – Casas in the secondary, Rider on the defensive line. Two others who are expected to carry more than their weight on defense are linebackers Dane Vernor and Collin Smith. Once this unit gels, and having the Skyline game canceled would’ve given them all another games under their belt, watch out.
