Honza, Ennis outlast Cleburne in 11, 6-5


Teammates tackle Jarron Honza following his game-winning hit. Like playing close-proximity dodgeball against a well-armed octopus, Ennis somehow sidestepped scoring threats for 11 innings until they mustered one to escape No. 9 ranked Cleburne, 6-5, to snap the Jackets 20-game district winning streak. Friday’s home Houdini thriller lifted the Lions to 10-9-2 overall and to 4-4 in District 14-5A. Cleburne, 19-3-1, fell to 5-1 and set up a huge two-game series this week for them against Corsicana (17-5, 5-1). The Tigers, riding a six-game winning streak, were scheduled to host the first game on April 9. Ironically, Ennis has handed both teams their only defeat. The first of their final four district games was played at home last night against Midlothian (13-9, 2-4). The Lions will be at Midlo at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 12. Fighting for a playoff berth in a very carniverous district, Ennis, now in fourth place, closes their 12-game league season with third place Joshua (16-7, 5-3) on April 16 and 18.
