The Greatest Show on Earth won the Academy Award for best picture and the Detroit Lions defeated the Browns in Cleveland, 17-7, to win the NFL championship. Mother Teresa opened a home for dying and destitute in Calcutta, India, the London Smog killed 4,000 and The Today Show was an NBC debut. The average cost of a new house was $9,050 with the average cost for rent at only $80 per month. Americans made $3,850 annually, which helped pay for an average new car’s cost of $1,700.
