Ennis rackets squeak past Red Oak, 10-8

Seeking to put distance between the top two teams in District 14-5A, Ennis battled past Red Oak, 10-8, on a hot, sultry Tuesday. It secured their 58th consecutive district team win. In his pre-match speech to the team, Head Coach Keith Howard preached teamwork and playing with a warriors’ mindset. It helped propel Ennis, starting with three boys doubles matches, and then three girls doubles, and one in mixed doubles, as is the custom in Team Tennis play. That’s seven possible points. Coming out of the blocks with fire and determination, Ennis took five of the seven in pairs to go on top 5-2 heading into 12 singles matches, six boys and six girls. Long volleys and heart-pounding baseline play set the tone for the second half of the afternoon and on into the evening showdown.
