Finding the fire that’s been hidden


Staring at 0-2 heading into the fourth week of the season, Ennis may have already met the best team in the District 8-5A. Kaufman looked the part on Friday. Starting the campaign as the youngest and greenest of the nine league teams, the Maroon Lions, with just two returning defensive starters from 2017, are gaining in experience. Stephen Marrow, a longtime coach in Ennis, reminded me of the importance of experience in football. As he exited the field following the loss, he spoke in positive terms of how the team is growing, reminding me these young men had the minimum of experience entering week No. 1. Head Coach Sam Harrell said similarly. He mentioned the positives of how certain players are slowly coming alive. While mentioning only a few, one being defensive end Marlon Jones. He had one of his best games since joining the varsity in the loss against a good Kaufman team. The coach also spoke highly about how the underclassmen are actually getting their reps and, exposed to different (strategic) looks, which will also help them grow.
