Great Dane is state-bound

Friday night lights in Austin is popular for keeping it weird. This week at 6 p.m. Friday, May 10, it will include flying saucers. The Class 5A State Track & Field Championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the 20,000 seat Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus. Ennis High School has a lone representative in junior Dane Vernor. A 5’11, 190-pound multi-sport athlete, he earned a berth at the state meet after winning first place at the Region II event last week at UT-Arlington. He threw the discus 161 feet and three inches, the third best effort in school history, five inches shy of Dalas Todisco’s mark (161’ 08) in 2018 and 13 inches short of Todd Kitchens’ 1992 record of 162’ 04. Vernor is one of nine competitors, two from each region and the third place finisher with the best distance, including sophomore Vernon Henderson, of South Oak Cliff.
