Harrell’s jet-set take wing


If it seems like the world belongs to the Harrell’s, then the rest of us are just paying rent. Sam Harrell may not have invented the spread offense in football, but his version has put points a’plenty on the board and opponents on their heels. His sons, Zachary, Graham and Clark, blessed with great pedigree, have parlayed their knowledge and experience into a combination of winning football and winning at life. While Sam has enjoyed a meteoric rise in Ennis, Graham did similarly at quarterback at Texas Tech, then Green Bay and now as offensive coordinator at Southern Cal. It is the latest move by eldest son Zac, with Clark in tow, that has greatly mirrored his father. He was named the head coach and athletic director at nearby Athens, just 55 miles southeast of Ennis. His ability to work with young high school men is energizing this town of 13,000. The Henderson County seat, already known for fishing and as the “Black-Eyed Pea Capital of the World,” isn’t exactly win-starved on the gridiron. Recently retired
