In praise of the Lions defense

Both Paul Willingham, the veteran DC for Ennis, and Head Coach Sam Harrell, spoke well of the difference the Lions defense made in the upset of Corsicana on Friday.
Q1 What was the goal of the defense, their main focus?
PW Contain Blake Hoffman (QB) and to stop their top three running plays.
Q2 Preventing the Tigers from getting outside, was that the plan?
PW That was the priority.
Q3 How often did the team blitz?
PW We blitzed quite a bit. But you can blitz and stunt your way into trouble. We dodged several bullets when blitzing Friday. The two coaches were asked to name players who stood out or best executed their assignments on defense. Both mentioned many of the same names, including: Zane Rider, Dane Vernor, Isaiah Nies, Ryan Casas, Collin Smith, Deryous Stokes and Stephon Townsend. The leaders in tackles were junior LB Dane Vernor and senior DT Zane Rider with 13 and 10 respectively. Next in stops were senior Ryan Casas with 9, sophomore DT Deryous Stokes 8, sophomore safety Stephon Townsend 7, junior MLB Isaiah Nies 5, and four others with four tackles – senior CB Stephen Alexander, senior LB/DE Collin Smith, junior LB Payton Chapman and freshman safety Dee Johnson. Stephen Alexander had perhaps his best game at cornerback. Read stories like this and more in your latest edition of The Ennis News. Be informed, subscribe today!
