Lady Lions are rolling

A year after rolling through the regular season with little resistance, the Ennis girls basketball team is gearing up to defend their 2017 District 17-5A championship. But instead of being eliminated after one post-season win, they have set their goals higher. The Lady Lions went 9-1 in league action and finished the season at 24-9. They defeated Bryan (18-11 record), 71-69, though they led throughout, in bi-districts. A slow start doomed them in the area round when Leander Rouse (26-11) turned a 23-10 first quarter into a 62-52 win. Head coach David Kilpatrick strategically outlined a considerably tougher non-district schedule this season. “Our district didn’t really prepare us for what we would face in the playoffs (in 2017),” he said, “so we arranged for tougher terrain this year.” That is an understatement. Ennis has played 16 opponents from Class 6A, which explains the elevation of defeats in the loss column. Now 14-14 and 4-0 in league play, “Killer” believes his squad is better prepped and possibly even superior than their predecessor. During their current 6-0 run they are averaging 64.3 points per game and yielding just 29.3. Read this story and more in your Weekend edition of The Ennis News. Be informed, subscribe today!
