Lions have overcome slow starts before

Friday’s outcome at Rose Stadium may sound like a thorn, but the play of the Ennis Lions had the look of a perennial coming into bloom. At least for a half. Jack Alvarez has been through enough gridiron battles to know that even the best of teams can take a few early hits before reaching their stride. His 2014 team, in fact, started 0-2 before reeling off 14 in a row to win the state crown. Of Ennis’ other
four teams who were coronated, only one (2001) went unbeaten, and the only other team to start 2-0 (2004), fell in their third game.
