Nemesis Abbott gets past No. 1 Avalon in Class 1A playoffs

Power-hitting junior Clayton Hopgood (4) had six hits in the three-game series with Abbott. For the second straight year, Abbott (19-9-1) has ended an outstanding baseball season for nearby Avalon (19-6), and both times it took a loss in the third game of a best-of-three series in the Class 1A regional semi-finals. The orange-clad Eagles, ranked No. 1 in the state, dropped a 6-2 decision in Game One on Friday at Whitney High School. They bounced back in Game Two, 9-8, on Saturday afternoon. Abbott scored four, four and six runs in the first three innings to crush the Eagles, 14-2, in the decisive Game Three that evening. Having split two games during the regular season, each decided by one run, the Eagles strong pitching staff was exploited over the weekend for 28 runs while their bats were held to 13. It was not what they had hoped for. Abbott (pop. 360), located between Hillsboro and West along I-35, won the 2017 state championship with a 29-3-1 record. Head Coach Kyle Crawford has now won 12-of-15 games against the Eagles over the past four campaigns. Read stories like this and more in your latest edition of The Ennis News.
