Palmer, Italy, Avalon open baseball playoffs


Neither Ennis nor Ferris, the Class 5A and Class 4A teams in the Big 5, qualified for the state playoffs, while the next three, Palmer, Italy and Avalon, not only have, but all have a solid shot to advance beyond the first round. The bi-district games begin this weekend. Ennis (11-12-2) and Ferris (4-15-1) finished two and four games back of fourth place, respectively, though the Lions were in the hunt until the last week of the regular season. After going 3-3 at midseason in District 14-5A, a 2-4 stretch run, including three losses in their final four games had them going the opposite direction of those punching their post-season ticket. In their final last three games they collected three, five and three hits, hardly enough to produce runs with their bats. Cleburne (23-5-2) won the regular season on the final night, routing cellar-dwelling Waco University (7-15), 10-0, while Joshua (19-9) blanked second place Corsicana (20-8), 4-0.
