Rally falls short for boys basketball

Corsicana, 11-16, managed to hold off a frenzied comeback by Ennis on Tuesday to escape with a 49-47 boys basketball victory in front of the largest Ensign Gym crowd of the season. The Lions, now 5-16 overall, remain tied for last in District 17-5A with Lindale. The teams, each 0-4 in league action, played in Ennis on Friday. The Tigers are 2-2 in the district. Holding onto the slimmest of margins, 47-46, Devan Lindsey, a junior, sank a baseline runner with 1:50 to play to give the Striped Cats a three-point lead. Tested down to the wire, they would not relinquish control of the lead. After staking an 11-point lead (29-18) early in the second quarter, Corsicana found an array of defensive adjustments by the Lions prevented them from pulling away. Ennis fought tooth and nail with a cast that totally bought in to the press, zone and man-to-man strategies ordered by Head Coach Byron Northrup “Wow! The crowd was very good and the guys fed off them,” said Northrup, who is in his second season. “They were positive and wouldn’t let the team give up each time they ran ahead.” Read this story and more in your Weekend edition of The Ennis News.
