SAGU grad hired at Western NM

Former standout Waxahachie quarterback Venique Benton has been hired to coach defensive backs at Western New Mexico University. Benton, who transferred to SAGU in 2012 after redshirting at Abilene Christian University, won the leadership award and was the Most Valuable Player for the 2009 Waxahachie team that went 14-1. The dual-threat quarterback passed for 2,500 yards and rushed for another 750 while being named first team all-district and honorable mention all-state. He also played cornerback for the Tribe. The 2010 graduate played basketball and ran track where his best sprint times included a 10.5 in the 100 meter dash. During the eight seasons (44-42 overall) since Benton, the Indians reached nine wins just once (2011) and made the playoffs only three times.
