Seven Ennis hoopsters make All-District

Rising like cream to the top, Ennis senior guard Zion Manuel, recently named the Offensive Player of the Year by District 14-5A basketball coaches, overcame two years of frustration to reach the zenith among scoring threats in the seven-team league. While he had his moments during his previous seasons in maroon, the stars finally aligned under new Head Coach Roynal Bridgeforth. They allowed Manuel to maximize his skills and yet remain in a balanced offensive attack. At 6’0, 185-pounds, he enjoyed a very productive winter on both ends of the court, so much that his mouthpiece often dangled like Steph Curry. Call it swag. Ennis does not provide individual player statistics, though the varsity staff said Manuel averaged approximately 18-19 points per game. He had at least three games over 30 points, including 34 in a district game the final week of the regular season. Bridgeforth describes Manuel as a hard-worker who is hard to defend. “He is a slasher with the ball,” he said. “Zion took hold of the leadership mantle and wore it well.” There were times when he had to don Superman’s cape too, scoring in surges, often to spark a rally or keep the team in the game.
