State baseball championships decided this weekend

Area baseball fans have two North Texas Class 5A teams playing in the state tournament at the 11,600 seat Dell Diamond, just north of Austin in Round Rock. Both of those teams go head-to-head in a single-game knockout on Thursday. At 4 p.m. it will be Colleyville Heritage (37-3) and Corsicana (29-10), with the winner advancing to meet the victor between Georgetown (40-4-1) and Sharyland Pioneer (37-8), who play at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The championship is slated for Saturday, June 8, at noon. Colleyville, located between Fort Worth and Grapevine, is led by the nation’s No. 2 pick in this week’s major league baseball draft, the 6’1, 185 pound Bobby Witt, Jr. His stat line is impressive, hitting .500 with 54 RBI and 62 runs scored. The shortstop has more home runs (15) than strike outs (11). He has led the Panthers to the cusp of the state championship. Besides all of the superlatives, he’s known as a good kid. Heritage has gone 8-1 in reaching Round Rock, scoring 64 (7.1 rpg) and allowing 29(3.2). During the regular season they won District 7-5A with a 14-0 mark, four games better than Grapeville.
