Dallas police, firefighters receive boosts in pay

Last week the Dallas Police Department and firefighters received news the City Council had approved, by an 11-3 vote, to adjust the starting pay of new recruits from $49, 207 to $60,000, with employees making more than that receiving 3-percent raises. The boost in pay takes effect Jan. 1, 2019. According to one study on NBC News, the City of Dallas compiled average pay for similar services in 17 Texas cities, with their new increase comparing favorably over Austin, El Paso, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio, though both Plano and Denton start at $67,644 and $65,136 respectively. By allowing the raise, the message, says Mike Mata, the Dallas Police Association President, should help with both hiring and retention of officers and firefighters. Ennis Chief of Police John Erisman said on Friday that starting pay with the EPD has been $48,000 since their last raise a year ago, a figure right in line with Dallas.
