City approves water audit

Justin Tubbs, justin@ennisdailynews.com

Ennis City commissioners passed a resolution at Monday’s City Commission meeting with a 5 to 1 vote, authorizing City Manager Chuck Ewings to enter into an agreement with Ameresco, Inc. to conduct an audit on water meters in the city of Ennis. The audit will cost the city $48,000, and the money will come from the city’s general fund.

Ewings said the city is experiencing about a 13% water loss annually, due to water going undetected through older meters. In 2013, the city experienced an estimated 19% water loss. The city keeps track of about 5,900 meters, and the city has replaced 695 in the past five years. Before 2009, the city changed an average of 300 meters per year.
