Ferris forced out of playoffs, 45-39

Sophomore guard DeMarcus Rankin was a dependable scorer for the Jackets. Good coaching and teamwork came within a minute of beating a team of drifting talent on Friday night in Ennis. Hillsboro scored the final seven points to eke out a 45-39 triumph over a determined squad from Ferris. To be sure, the Yellowjackets boys basketball team had to be considered a clear underdog to Hillsboro (19-11) as the pair met in a tie-breaker to determine fourth place in District 6-4A. The victorious Eagles qualified for a playoff berth and a bi-district clash with No. 23 ranked China Spring (20-13) on Feb. 19 at West H.S.
“It was a great game I was very proud of the effort our guys displayed on the court. We played great defense for most of game,” said Jerrel Chumley, first year head coach at Ferris. “Throughout the game we struggled shooting and scoring. That is what hurt us tonight.”
