The Ennis Chamber of Commerce welcomed Bluebonnet City Grill at their ribbon cutting Thursday. Grand Opening specials and events were held Thursday through Sunday in celebration.

Bluebonnet City Grill is located at 305 SW Main Street in Ennis.

Ennis ISD has begun a strategic initiative to provide support for students who might otherwise struggle with coping, who may need motivation or might be tempted to drop out of school. Communities In Schools (CIS) helps reach out to at risk students to intercept them prior to issues becoming barriers in their education.

Pandering to pooches

Carlton Myers is stout and has a robust personality, much like his prized four American Pit Bull Terriers. While the former is known as an excellent chef who caters at some classy venues, his penchant for pandering to pooches makes him the top dog in Ennis.

At last month’s Blue Haven Kennel Fun Show at Rotary Park, his fourth event in town in recent years, which he said attracted a smaller-than-expected entry of 15 canines, he combined his two loves and a crowd of nearly 50 ate it up.

Making way for FreshPet operations

Work has begun at what will be a 600K square foot project, FreshPet Kitchens 3.0 plant at 4800 Sterilite Drive in Ennis. In the past two weeks, according to site manager Willie Everett (pictured), preliminary ground work has started at the new refrigerated pet food maker.

Quenton Rush is the manager for CRB construction. He heads up Trailer City, already in place, which house the many groups involved.

Falling leaves, low-waters to help recover submerged car

Locating the deceased body of 38-year old Emily Wade in Chambers Creek, a week after she was believed to have accidentally driven during heavy rains in January of 2019, gave her family and friends a large measure of closure. Finding her, a silver 2012 Nissan Altima with Kentucky plates (411 PAZ), has proven more challenging.

Women diagnosed with breast cancer who want to speak with someone who has survived the disease can do so thanks to a unique program sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The Reach to Recovery program from the ACS connects current cancer patients with breast cancer survivors via an online chat. Patients, regardless of where they are in their cancer journeys, can connect with volunteers for one-on-one support. Volunteers can help patients cope with treatment and side effects.

Hay Maze through October

The City of Ennis, Parks and Rec and the creative aerosol paint and design of Ben Vyers have made the Hay Maze a great attraction downtown. Use caution in the area when smoking.

Added lighting and video surveillance are a plus, especially considering the foot traffic of children and families, let alone a warning to vandals. The display of hay and pumpkins have been the target of night damage, hence the cameras, improved lighting and added eyes.

Fire destroys house

On Thursday evening, Oct. 1, 2020, at approximately 6 p.m., the Ennis Fire Department was requested for mutual aid to 505 Mach Road for a reported structure fire. Ennis Fire Department arrived on scene along with Telico, Alma and Garrett Rural Fire Departments. When they arrived they found a one story brick residence fully involved. All occupants were out of residence according to the owner. The residence was a complete loss. The fire is currently under investigation by the Ellis County Fire Marshal’s Office to determine the cause.

Fiery head-on crash kills two truck drivers

A fiery head-on collision claimed the lives of two drivers just east of I-45 on State Highway 34 at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Dark smoke from the crash could be seen for miles and traffic on Hwy 34 was shutdown for nearly five hours.

Three fire trucks responded, two from Ennis, the other from nearby Garrett, which was hauling water. Accident reports from both the Ennis Fire and Police Departments are ongoing.

Home sweet home thrives at Brookdale

Sunshine and life continue their radiance at Brookdale Assisted Senior Living on the west side of Ennis. And the reasons are many.

Originally built in 1996 as the Sterling House, Brookdale is part of a number of senior communities in the Metroplex and is quite similar to their namesake in Corsicana. The only assisted living community in Ennis, they offer 33 apartments, all with kitchenettes. Studios and two-bedroom units are also available to adults age 55 and up. A positive is their staff of 25, which includes a registered nurse.
