EISD, Alamo go back to the future

Ennis ISD approved a plan on Tuesday that would help the district position itself for the anticipated influx of families moving into a number of new residential projects in and around the city.

The plan, as announced by Superintendent Jay Tullos, is a strategic project in preparation of the coming need for classroom space among students in grades 1-6. In the works since last spring, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously, 7-0, in favor of the idea to open Alamo Middle School, which served as the high school until 1981.

Ellis Co. hopefuls declared

Secretary of State John B. Scott’s office has posted the names and parties of those who filed for the March 1 primaries, including a complete slate from the GOP in Ellis County.

The historically Republican County is weighted to the Right in candidates, though Kelly Blackburn, the Democratic County chair, says there are three party hopefuls campaigning for a position. Many of the upcoming races will have the current office-holder running unopposed, though there is competition in others.

Fire Chief retires after 36 years

Retiring Ennis Fire Department Chief, Jeff Aycock, was honored this week at the Fire Station on Lake Bardwell Drive. City Manager Marty Nelson saluted his 36 years of service and leadership, which saw three additional stations built. Joining in the festive occasion were a group of local, retired firefighters and members of Chief Aycock’s family. A commemorative wood and glass locker, filled with his gear and boots, was presented during the event. 

Wrap party held for book featuring local’s work

A wrap party in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, 60 miles west of Toronto, was held to celebrate the completion of a dozen original illustrations by artist Laurie McGaw that are to be included in historian Hugh Brewster’s children’s book, Unsinkable Lucile.

A handful of area leaders were recognized at a ceremony hosted by the Grand Prairie Police Department and Chief of Police, Daniel Scezney.

Ennis had three members introduced for their known service, including new Police Chief, Dustin Munn, and Crime Prevention Officer, Roger Cole, along with County Commissioner of Precinct 2, Lane Grayson, who also serves in the capacity of Chaplain.

Holidays are for shopping, families, football, and for basketball fans, tis the season for hooping. HC Roynal Bridgeforth has the Ennis varsity Lions off to their best start in years. Following a 6-1 beginning, they were 7-5 heading into Friday’s home tilt with the Class 5A West Mesquite (4-7) Wranglers.

The tune-up will serve as preparation for Tuesday’s District 14-5A debut at Midlothian (7-8). The contest tips off at 7:30 p.m. and Coach Bridgeforth welcomes a contingent of maroonclad fans.

The Lions then play 4 or 5 games during a Dec. 27-28 tournament in Mesquite.

Christmas and New Year’s drivers urged to move over or slow down for tow trucks and other emergency vehicles

AUSTIN – As they travel Texas roadways during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, motorists are urged to slow down or move over for stopped emergency vehicles including tow trucks, police cars and fire trucks.

Texas law requires drivers to slow down at least 20 miles per hour under the posted speed limit or, if able, to change lanes when they’re passing a first responder stopped on the road.

Century Club holds monthly meetings

For their October meeting, member of the Ennis Century Club met in the home of Cynthia Newsome with Kathy Morse presiding. Rachael Bishop assisted Mrs. Newsome as hostess. A buffet was served in the dining area of the home prior to the meeting. Penny Atwood presented the program, Twenty-five Facts You Did Not Know About Texas. In addition to regular members present, three new members were welcomed to the club including Henrietta Novotny, Janice Copeland and Judy Conatser.

Toys and gifts from the Salvation Army were delivered to the First United Methodist Church yesterday for distribution to families who signed up for the Angel Tree earlier this fall. As a result of countless donations, over 300 children will receive toys and clothes this Christmas. EISD staff and community volunteers assisted in the unloading of the boxes and sacks that will be distributed to families for the holiday. Thanks to everyone who assisted in this effort. #WeAreEnnis
