Ennis High School athletics learned on Monday, February 2, which district the Lions football team will compete for the next two years, while volleyball, basketball and other sports were similarly informed of their assigned district for 2026-2028.

One year and eight months ago, the city of Ennis elected its forty-fifth mayor. They could have named No. 46 this weekend, unless a runoff moves the decision to April 4.

Across Texas and America, the aging infrastructure has grown to near-crisis levels, and Ennis is no different. Neighboring Waxahachie just approved their largest housing and retail development in their history, and experts are warning to hit the pause button as the existing water, electrical capacity and wastewater capabilities are not up to the task.

Waxahachie City Council approved by virtue of a 3-2 vote a proposal by Minto Communities USA to develop a new master-planned community west of I-35. Those voting in favor of what will be the city’s largest housing neighborhood were Tres Adkins, Chris Wright and Travis Smith. Those opposing were Mayor Billie Wallace and Mayor Pro Tem Patrick Souter.

In a much-ballyhooed local special election, registered voters within the city limits of Ennis will cast ballots for both the mayor and mayor pro tem next Saturday, January 31. There are five candidates competing for mayor and an additional four running for the temporary or acting mayor when the official mayor is absent.
