Memorial services for Albert Ernest Bigler, 96, of Ennis, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2021, at Grace Lutheran Church, 2402 W. Ennis Ave., Ennis, with Pastor Sean McMaughan officiating. Albert passed away after a brief illness with cancer.

Albert Ernest Bigler was born on July 18, 1924 in Strawn, Texas to Albert and Annie Louise (Hornberger) Bigler. On February 17, 1943 he joined the United States Army with the 785th Tank Battalion and fought in World War II being stationed in the United States as well as the Philippines.  He received his Honorable Discharge on February 25, 1946 having obtained the rank of Corporal.  Albert worked for Southern Pacific Railroad from October 20, 1940 until retiring on February 28, 1983. He married Myrtle Mae Koether on September 6, 1952 in Carmine, Texas.  After traveling as a laborer, Gang Foreman and Assistant Roadmaster with the railroad, Albert took a job as the Roadmaster at the Southern Pacific yard and they moved to Ennis, Texas in May of 1962 and made that their home. He enjoyed fishing and picking pecans. Albert was very active in his church and loved taking care of the grounds. His motto he lived by was “You have to be a friend to have a friend”.

Albert passed away on December 25, 2020 at his home in Ennis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Annie Bigler; wife, Myrtle Mae Bigler; and brother-in-law, Calvin Koether.

Albert is survived by his sister-in-law, Brennice Dodd Koetherof Giddings; niece, Cathy Koether Carney and her husband, Robert of Ledbetter; two great nephews, Josh Carney and his wife, Chelsea of California and Lee Carney and his wife, Lauren of Leander; one great niece, Caitie Carney Weishuhn and her husband, Riley of Columbus; three great, great nephews, Wyatt Carney of Leander, Clay Carney of Leander and Auggie Carney of California, as well as numerous beloved friends.  Also, a special thank you goes out to his caregiver, Livi Villasenora, for her care and compassion during Albert’s last weeks of his life.
