Twain didn't say it

Mark Twain has long been attributed to a famous quote in error. “A lie will go round the world while truth is pulling its boots on.”

The powerful statement was actually made by London preacher Charles Spurgeon in Gems from Spurgeon in 1859. Twain is often credited for the line about how fast lies spread, which is an irony in itself. He didn’t say it.
