Playing the national anthem prior to athletic venues became a ritual in 1931 during major league baseball and quickly spread to other sports in the United States. Part of it was due to patriotism surrounding World Wars I and II and also technology allowed for sound systems to clearly air the voice of singers. Until then, anthems and music was limited to instruments.
