A year after leading the area in wins, a very young Lady Bulldog team shows flashes of hope, though injuries, primarily to their top attacker, has Palmer looking forward to September. Veteran HC Melanie Barnes says junior frontline star, Reese Zhanel, has been rehabbing a leg throughout August.

Sophomore outside hitter Jordyn Brown, an All-District attacker last fall, has picked up where she left off. In a recent interview, she credited her veteran Coach, Kelly Henderson, for driving her to achieve more by her “belief in me. She gives me confidence.”

All across the Lone Star State, next weekend commences the start of the new season! Four of the six teams in The Ennis News coverage area have a home debut, including one of the best rivalries in Texas; Waxahachie -vs- Ennis. Lion Memorial Stadium will have its capacity of 10,000 tested, as will Ferris’ Yellowjacket Stadium at 3,106 and the cowbell capital, Palmer Bulldog Stadium, is planning on exceeding 2,000.

Competing on a two-mile, short course in Lancaster, three Ennis cross country teams each finished third in a warm-up event for eight area Cross Country teams. It was 84 degrees when the pistol was fired at 7am, soon reaching 99 with a heat index of 107.

Senior setter Autumn Cooper (12) came off the bench and delivered seven critical kills in the Lady Lions sweep of Mesquite at home last week. Sharing the position with junior Ava Dominguez has given Ennis two contributors in the opening weeks of the season.

Veteran HC Kelly Henderson made public this year’s team roster when professional photos were being taken on Monday morning. Following a 13-20-2 mark a year ago, a promising season that ended with a 1-13 skid, she has established a young lineup this year that is comprised of only five returning players.
