The Ennis Country Club, once popular for its golf tourneys and lunch time gatherings, has been gone for nearly a decade. The brick structure is now demolished and a new home has been built on the site by a local businessman and his family.

Charges of burglary of Ennis’s Plaza Theatre were filed against two Dallas men in 1941. Isaac Tomerlin and Frank Lee were arrested for the looting.

This month marks the 76th anniversary of the start of World War II’s Battle of Iwo Jima, shortly after which four Ennis men lost their lives. Dooney Pierce, Joe Crow, Airdale Goodwin and Jack Lummus were among the Marines and Navy men who stormed the island and were felled within days of one another in February and March 1945. The conflict on Iwo Jima would go on for 37 days, during which time some 5,931 Americans and 19,800 Japanese were killed.
