Benefactors of school teachers are as numerous as chalk squeaks on a blackboard, yet the number of teachers across the nation continues to decrease. And the reasons are both understandable as they are worrisome.

“Something smells horrible in this room,” I announced as I proceeded from throw pillow to throw pillow, picking each up, and burying my nose deeply in its downy fill.

“I can always sleep in my rain jacket,” my husband, Peter, announced.

It has been said that polls are for strippers and cross-country skiers. The late humorist Erma Bombeck spoke with disdain of them, saying, “I haven’t trusted polls since I read that 62 percent of women had affairs during their lunch hour. I’ve never met a woman in my life who would give up lunch for sex.”

Heartwarming was the response last week when it was learned that the City of Ennis was opening the Welcome Center downtown for a couple of days and nights for anyone in need of shelter or heat.
