High school football in Eastern Ellis County produced all five teams a berth in the playoffs for the second successive season.

Their wheels are whirling like the cartoon Taz-man. Big 5 teams hit the court this week, four of them on Tuesday, Aug. 10, with one, Ennis taking action later in the week, including their home debut on Friday against Hillcrest.

No. 7 ranked Ennis will open preseason camp with three morning practices before switching to the afternoons once school began on Thursday, Aug. 12.

The Lions Varsity tennis team earned their first win of the fall season in a 17-2 rout of Houston’s J. Frank Dobie High School.

Cue two instruments, first the contrabassoon from the woodwinds, and then the cello from the string section. This tandem can scare the bejezus out of anyone when played in rhythm.

One of my favorite sports to watch live is volleyball. Like hockey, seeing it in person is far better than on the screen.

Four-of-the-Big 5 schools will begin pre-season football camp on Monday, Aug. 2. Ferris, Palmer, Italy and Avalon open practices now, a week prior to Ennis, who start on Aug. 9.

Big 5 varsity volleyball teams will take to the court in a week on Monday, August 2. Practice schedules may very with many squads having two-a-days that first week before they begin scrimmages, tournaments and non-district matches.

Former Ennis safety and linebacker K.D. Davis has been gaining pre-season recognition as “the Shark” at the University of North Texas. At 5’11, 229-lbs, the junior returns as the starting middle linebacker for the Mean Green.
