It was 15-years ago and I had a vacation, flying from Detroit to Casper, Wyoming for a week at a dude ranch. Wonderful, majestic times were enjoyed at Buffalo, set in the Big Horn Mountains near the Montana state line.

I remember the day the husband’s older brother said to me, “Susan, oh Susan, this you need to learn: we Lincolns aren’t slaves to fashion.” Since he was wearing a hideous, stretched-out t-shirt and faded athletic shorts, he was clearly stating the obvious, and I was completely unimpressed.

It was 1968 and Rowan & Martin’s Laugh In, a rapid-fire sketch/ comedy on TV, was all the rage. A song by Pigmeat Markham, Here Comes the Judge, inspired a routine by Sammy Davis Jr., who was dressed in a black robe while his head was adorned with a white peruke wig.

I am a small person from a small town in Alabama who moved to a small town in Florida. I have a small life—some days smaller than others. On all of those days--small and large--I am a rule follower.

It’s that time of year again… school is ending and summer is coming fast. When I was a student, one of my favorite things about the end of the school year was getting my new yearbook. That leads me to a question, what is the first thing that you did when you got your yearbook?

When I was a child and Mother’s Day ushered in the month of May, we wore a corsage of red floribunda roses and ribbons if our Mother was living, or a corsage of white blooms and lace if our Mother was dearly departed.
