It has been said that polls are for strippers and cross-country skiers. The late humorist Erma Bombeck spoke with disdain of them, saying, “I haven’t trusted polls since I read that 62 percent of women had affairs during their lunch hour. I’ve never met a woman in my life who would give up lunch for sex.”

I see her often in the grocery store.

Heartwarming was the response last week when it was learned that the City of Ennis was opening the Welcome Center downtown for a couple of days and nights for anyone in need of shelter or heat.

There are a variety of opinions on the infamous events of January 6, though only two are purported on network news. It’s a shame because I doubt either are remotely close to what actually transpired.

Accuracy in reporting should be a primary focus. American journalism has swung wildly to the left, where the truth is often strained through a sifter that flavors the news with a slant, even a strong tilt, to meet an agenda by a particular side.

Last year was challenging for many, and as we move ahead in 2022, may we dedicate our minds and hearts to continue drawing as near to God as we can. Psalm 24:7 promises, “The angel of the Lord encamps round about them that fear Him, and He delivers them.” This is referring to the reverential fear that many Christians have become too busy to think about. Let us not become distracted or discouraged as the enemy is trying to weaken and scatter God’s people. Pray for spiritual sensitivity so that you will not allow the intensity of the Holy Spirit’s fire within you to dwindle to a lukewarm ember. Where are the living sacrifices, and where is the boldness and desperation to walk with God? Guard your heart and never lose your fervency to obey God or the constant longing for His presence. Jesus is waiting for His warriors to awaken and prepare for His return, but many do not see the urgency.

For weeks now, all we have heard is atta-boys for the leadership of Ennis. The good news about the downtown, underground refuse system is the talk of the town. We get it. We all owe a doff of the cap, a nod of the head, an appreciative wink, and perhaps a fist bump or, for sure, a thumbs up.
