Former three-time Class 5A state qualifier in the high jump, Ennis grad, Katherine Stuckly, took second at the Sun Belt Conference Track & Field Championship for Texas State. The meet was held May 14 at Lafayette, La.

Southwestern Assemblies of God University, the only four-year college in Ellis County, won the NCCAA National Championship on Thursday in Kansas City with a 7-4 win over Columbia University.

A local student, Zabian Zuniga, will formally accept the rank of Eagle Scout by the Boy Scouts of America, at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 22. The ceremony will be held at the downtown Gazebo at Minnie McDowell Park at the corner of North Dallas St., and W. Knox St. The public is invited.

Bump, set and spike are the rage in the Ennis Girls City Volleyball League this year. In fact, Saturday, May 21, they finish their season with all seven teams in a one-day playoff tournament at the BF Thomas Gym. It is located behind Alamo Sixth Grade School.

A year after the two Top 10 teams in the state met in the Class 2A Regional Quarterfinals, Italy and Crawford are back for another showdown. In 2021 the Pirates won Game Three, 1-0, in extra innings on a dropped ball tag at the plate to decide the victor before a huge, standing room only crowd at West. The Swashbucklers outscored Italy by an 8-6 margin in the series.

Like a cowboy riding away, former two-time First team All-District baseball player at Ennis, Taylor Daniell, is winding up his collegiate career for the Tarleton State Texans.

Ennis Lady Lions Track and Field have capped the spring season, though HC Lonnie Redning added news of some impressive hardware this week. The Texas Track and Field Coaches Association awarded 10 members in maroon with Academic All- State honors.

Less than four months away is the start of a new era of Italy football. No, not “Azzurri,” the Blues nickname for their national soccer team, rather, a fresh beginning for the Olde Gold football Gladiators under new HC Lee Wilkins.

Class 2A Itasca located on 35W, is known more for its mythical mascot, the Wampus Cats, than for winning football. This week they named a new HC in Ricky Torres. He was the Offensive Coordinator at Marlin (11-4) a year ago.
