Ennis Economic Development Corporation (EEDC), led by new Director Miriam Castillo, has launched a downtown outreach initiative in a bid to reshape how the city partners with downtown property owners and business leaders.

Expansion of the Ennis-based Ellis County Sports for children and teenagers doubled in size on Thursday, December 11, when accord was reached to add Italy and Maypearl leagues to Ennis and Palmer.

Area school districts will soon break for the holidays, and the respite provides an opportunity to review highlights from the first semester. The Ennis ISD Christmas Break is from December 19 to January 5.

Ice skaters and fans of gliding on frozen surfaces will relish in the opportunity to laceup and take to a free night of synthetic ice skating downtown on Saturday and Sunday, December 13 & 14. The City of Ennis and a group of sponsors are hosting the two-night, 5-9 p.m. outdoor event next to the mega, lit-up Christmas Trees at North Plaza.

Ennis voters will choose between five mayoral candidates in a special election on Saturday, January 31. Unique among them is Walter Lese, an Ennis resident since 1982.

Electing leaders to fill the unexpired terms of both mayor and mayor pro tem, is slated for Saturday, January 31, 2026. Trevor Wilhoite, an active community advocate, is one of four candidates for mayor pro tem.

photosbylezley.com Thursday’s Lights of Ennis and Downtown Block Party, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and a host of community businesses, drew a great crowd on a chilly night. There were high school bands from Ennis and Scurry-Rosser, illuminated floats, trailers full of cheerleaders, ball teams, church members, a dazzling fairy on stilts, candidates, inflated reindeer and the antics of monster trucks. At the end was a fire truck from the Telico Volunteer Fire Department. On top was Jolly St. Nick, ushering in the season. Holiday music, a lively post-parade dance troupe at Minnie McDowal Park, food, vendors, a real reindeer, and plenty to like for kids of all ages!

One of the most produced plays in the United States in 2018, “The Wickhams: Christmas at Pemberley,” hits the stage at Theatre Rocks over the next three weekends. It is a modern-day sequel to, Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” which was set in England.

Aspiring hopefuls for the January 31 Special Election will be on hand for a candidate forum on Thursday, January 8, at the SPJST Lodge.
