Due to extremely hazardous road conditions on Friday night and with the safety of our drivers being of utmost importance, the Sunday, February 21, 2021 edition of The Ennis News will be delivered and distributed on Monday, February 22.

May will bring warmer weather, spring flowers and a two-person mayoral ballot for the City of Ennis. Trevor J. Wilhoite added his name to the hat to go along with incumbent, Angeline Juenemann, who had previously announced she was seeking a second, four-year term.

Ennis City Commissioner of Ward 1 had a lone candidate file by Friday’s Feb. 12 deadline. According to City Secretary Angie Wade, only William L. Pruitt, II, who lives on F.M. 1181 east of I-45 on Creechville Road, applied to compete.

The Polar Bear Plunge was a fad five years ago where people were dunked in a five-gallon bucket of ice water as a fundraising ploy. Some, however, have found a number of benefits from limited swims in frigid waters, preferably at 41 degrees or warmer.

One of Ennis’ longtime, most storied citizens, James “Red” Sanders, downtown barber, 81, passed away on Feb. 5. Known for his signature white cowboy hat, personality and humor, the story-teller both told them and was the subject of many himself.

Cold winter temperatures begin to appear as early as November. While some people retreat into their homes to escape the chill, plenty of others embrace winter because of the opportunities for recreational activities such as snowboarding, skiing, snowtubing, and much more. Many do not mind the brisk temperatures, preferring the cold when walking the neighborhood or hiking nearby trails.

Now that the U.S. government has access to the COVID-19 vaccine, its rollout is quickly improving in every state, though still hindered by supply. In Ellis County things have accelerated at the hub in Waxahachie.

During Tuesday night’s Ennis Independent School District Board of Trustees meeting it was announced that all three board members whose terms expire this spring will all have their named reentered for the May 1 election.
