When the Lottie Moon Offering was taken each year at our church, my father stood behind the back pew in our large sanctuary, which accommodated more than 200 people, while various women’s circles and youth organizations voiced their individual totals in an orderly process.

It was 1968 and Rowan & Martin’s Laugh In, a rapid-fire sketch/ comedy on TV, was all the rage. A song by Pigmeat Markham, Here Comes the Judge, inspired a routine by Sammy Davis Jr., who was dressed in a black robe while his head was adorned with a white peruke wig.
