A new virus that threatened to do mighty harm has effected many and has been blamed for the deaths of 13 people in Ellis County. Most of those who have succumbed due to at least some coronavirus effects, have been senior citizens, whose health systems had already been compromised.

Pacing back and forth like caged polka bands forced to miss Ennis on Memorial Day weekend, members of the Ennis High School marching band are driven by an innate beat for performing.

The old Ennis National Bank Building, 110 W. Ennis Ave., seen here in an architectural drawing and a recent photo, was built in 1883 by town pioneer Joseph Baldridge. More on its history is contained in the document to the right. The check from 1890 was made out to Lawrence Daffan, early railroad superintendent and father of local writer Katie Daffan. The National Bank check and the card of historical documentation were owned and framed by Johnny Henry and presented to the Ennis Welcome Center by his daughter Leslie Henry. It may be a foregone conclusion that when awarding a scholarship to a student, a library is a good judge of academic prowess. Friends of the Ennis Public Library, a respected philanthropic supporter of the EPL, selected senior Sarah Bell as their 2020 recipient.

Plans for seniors graduating from Eastern Ellis County high schools are being announced and they represent the individuality of each school. Ennis, Ferris, Palmer, Italy and Avalon, who range from Class 5A to Class 1A, have arrived at particular procedures that suit their communities.

In recognition of the men and women who gave their all for this country, the annual Ennis Veterans Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at the Ennis Veterans Memorial. It is located adjacent to All-Star Bowl and behind Don Jose’s Restaurant. The public is invited.
