Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces.

Memorial Day is a bittersweet day on the calendar. Memorial Day is a day to pay homage to the brave men and women who lost their lives defending the United States. However, over time, Memorial Day has evolved into the unofficial beginning of summer.

Primary Runoff Elections are set for Tuesday, May 24, with both Republican or Democratic ballots being casts. Voters are ineligible to vote or participate in another political party’s primary election or convention this voting year.

A single-vehicle rollover accident claimed the life a 14-yearold Ferris student at 4:56 p.m. on May 17, Tuesday afternoon. There were three other male passengers, ages 14, 13 and 12, who were taken to Dallas’ Children’s Medical Center with nondisabling injuries. They were treated and released. All four were students at Ferris Junior High School.

A moment of national remembrance will take place at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, when a brief ceremony will be held at Pierce Park, 200 NW Main St., in downtown Ennis.

Former Ennis student-athlete, Caden Hubbard, a sophomore at Midwestern State University, was among 426 students recognized for achieving the Presidents Honor Roll this spring. A Class of 2020 EHS grad, Hubbard is a finance major.

Three of the five school districts in the primary coverage area of The Ennis News had school board candidates running unopposed on the May 7 ballot. Subsequently, all of them were awarded a new term. Palmer voters chose two from a field of three while Avalon will hold their election in the fall.

After over 2 years of holding city commission meetings in the Bluebonnet Room at the new Welcome Center, City Commission will begin conducting the business of Ennis at the renovated City Hall on Tuesday, May 17.

Ennis High School continues to roll out what is seemingly an endless river of talented musicians, both individually and in groups. Add more to the list as two Symphonic Bands racked up more accolades at the recent UIL Concert and Sightreading Competition at Duncanville High School.
