Rollercoasters are controlled fear. They have one spiritually redeeming value… they get you right with God before you reach the summit. Of course, the selfish part of our prayer is that we only ask for safety for this ride and not the one coming next, and we seldom, if ever, thank God we survived the temporary terror.

COVID-19: How the pandemic made ERMC better
In recent weeks, I have been reflecting on the unprecedented challenges that our community and our team at Ennis Regional Medical Center have faced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. More specifically, I’ve been intentionally looking for every possible silver lining in a time when – let’s face it – we all need some positive news. We are always seeking new ways to enhance how we care for our community and advance our mission of Making Communities Healthier. I truly believe that adversity is one of the greatest paths to improvement, and improving is exactly what we have done despite the difficult circumstances. And the truth is: there are silver linings everywhere.

My Juneteenth birthday
Having been born on Juneteenth has always brought a sense of pride to me. My mother taught me about the history and significance of the 1865 day in Galveston. What people in Texas did not know was that on Sept. 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln, in his Emancipation Proclamation speech, had freed enslaved people in the Confederate States.
